Walk 100K in March benefits for you and our crews

Our latest fundraising challenge is asking you to walk 100 kilometers in the month of March. Now while 100 kilometers might sound like a lofty target, the average person takes around 5,000 steps a day, which can be close to four kilometers. Do that for 25 days and – congratulations – you’ve hit 100K!

With 31 days in March, there’s plenty of time to get the distance in, but maintaining this regular activity can also have a range of health benefits:

  1. Walking all those kilometers will help you to burn calories and potentially lose weight.
  2. Walking consistently will strengthen and tone your muscles, improve your balance and increase your cardiovascular fitness.
  3. Walking and being more active in general can help lower your blood pressure and decrease your risk of heart issues in the future.
  4. Walking increases oxygen flow through the body, which can go a long way to reducing stress, giving you a lift and helping you to function at your best.

Walking 100 kilometers encourages you to get out of the house and explore your local area and beyond. By using a tracking app, you can see exactly where you’ve been and share your route with others.

If you are going out and about, any shoes or trainers that are comfortable, provide adequate support, and do not cause blisters will do. If you're walking to work, you could wear your usual work clothes with a comfy pair of shoes and change shoes when you get into work.

For longer walks, you may want to take some water, snacks, a spare top, and if we’re lucking enough to get some sunshine, sunscreen and a sun hat is a good idea. If you start going for longer walks regularly, you may want to invest in a waterproof jacket and some specialist walking shoes for more challenging routes.

If regular walking isn’t already part of your routine, the easiest way to walk more is to make it part of your average day, such as:

  1. Not driving for short journeys
  2. Walking your journey to work
  3. Walking the kids to school
  4. Using the stairs instead of the lift or an escalator
  5. Walking to the shops
  6. Going on a regular walk with a friend or family member

However you do it, taking on our challenge is a great way to improve your mobility and improve your overall health. You’ll be joining a dedicated group of others with the same goal to keep you motivated and counting the kilometers. With the support of your friends and family, you’ll also be raising vital funds to keep our air ambulance crews flying and saving lives in Scotland.
