Operation Skyward signals an exciting new chapter for Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance, one that will undoubtably benefit future patients in Scotland.
Adding a new Airbus H145 D3 to our fleet will instantly add a variety of operational benefits.
Our new aircraft will replace an existing EC 135 model and be based at the charity’s Aberdeen base. Currently being assembled for a customised aeromedical fit-out, the H145 D3 boasts a range of benefits for the charity’s frontline response. Here, we highlight some of the advantages of our new aircraft and how this will help our crew reach more patients, in time, throughout Scotland.
- One such advantage is the increase in fuel capacity. The H145 D3 allows an additional 60 minutes of flight time helping SCAA to reach more remote areas and fly more missions without refuelling, meaning they can travel further and reach patients in time.
- Our new aircraft will be equipped with weather radar and night vision. This will ensure that SCAA can navigate harsh weather more efficiently and operate more safely in hours of darkness. This will increase our crew’s ability to reach patients during Scotland’s challenging winters.
- The H145 D3 is a larger model of aircraft. So, when faced with critical and complex injuries, the larger helicopter will enable SCAA to carry an extra clinician and specialist equipment, which is particularly important for major incidents. This means a better chance of survival for the patient.
- With five blades as opposed to four and more space, the new aircraft will offer smoother, quieter flights with less vibrations which will help to keep patients more comfortable on their journey to hospital. It will also give us the ability to carry a loved one with the patient, which can be a great comfort during a traumatic experience.
- For the first time, SCAA has designed a medical fit out specific to our operating model. This will bring significant clinical improvements whilst offering flexibility to respond to all patients and scenarios.
- With the H145, SCAA is leading the way in air ambulance efficiency across the UK. When the new H145 D3 is online, we will be flying the most capable air ambulance of its kind in the UK in the most challenging environment.
- Scotland’s vast, rugged terrain and harsh weather demand a robust response, and the H145 D3’s capabilities are designed to meet these unique needs.
- Ultimately, the new H145 D3 air ambulance will help us to reach more patients in time to save and improve more lives throughout Scotland.
Once live, SCAA’s new aircraft will cost the charity an extra £2 million every year in operational costs. To fulfil our purpose to the nation, the charity believes the chance to save more lives is worth that cost.
