Staff and crew at Scotland’s Charity Air Ambulance took time out of their busy schedule today to mark 11 years of saving lives across Scotland.
Back in 2013, SCAA’s first mission came the day after the launch of their Perth-based air ambulance, flying to help Tricia Mackenzie after she was seriously injured in a car accident near Dunoon. Since then – and now with the welcome addition of a second air ambulance based in Aberdeen - SCAA has responded to nearly 6,000 call outs all over Scotland.
“None of this would have been possible without the generous support of the people of Scotland,” reflected SCAA Chief Executive David Craig. “Our crews are now responding to an average of three call outs every day to help people all over the country, showing just what a vital service this has become.”
Since our launch in 2013, over £50m has been raised by Scottish businesses, communities, grant organisations and by those who donate what they can afford. With this support over the past 11 years, SCAA has become one of the most recognisable charities in Scotland and an indispensable part of our nation’s emergency services network.
This is reflected in the fact that demand for our service has never been higher. The last year has been the busiest experienced by our crews, with our helicopters being tasked a record number of times. Also this year, SCAA experienced the busiest day in our history with our crews being deployed a total of 12 times to various medical emergencies throughout the country.
