Mission Review

Scotland's Charity Air Ambulance operates two helicopter air ambulances - Helimed 76 based in Perth and Helimed 79 based in Aberdeen. SCAA also has a Rapid Response Vehicle (RRV) at each base. Tasked through Scotland's 999 emergency response network, here are just some of the call outs we've responded to recently.

A man injured after falling from scaffolding at his Speyside home was in trauma care at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary within 20 minutes. Our Helimed 79 air ambulance helicopter airlifted a specialist medical team to the accident scene before airlifting the patient to hospital. SCAA's rapid flight from the scene was in contrast to the equivalent road journey which would have taken over an hour.

SCAA recently worked with colleagues from Ochils Mountain Rescue Team and Tayside Mountain Rescue Team to help a woman who had injured her leg in a fall on the Lomond Hills in Fife. Our reserve air ambulance then airlifted the woman to hospital in Dundee, just a short flight away.

SCAA was quickly on scene following a road traffic collision near Aberchirder recently. Our helicopter air ambulance delivered a specialist team to the scene and SCAA paramedics assisted before an injured woman was taken to hospital.

SCAA recently worked as part of a multi-disciplinary response, airlifting a specialist clinical team to a serious road traffic collision near Newtonmore. Alongside Helimed 2 from Inverness, SCAA's Helimed 79 was one of two air ambulances at the scene where paramedics worked with the injured. The most seriously injured patient was then airlifted to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary trauma care.

SCAA offers a regular lifeline to patients on the Orkney Islands requiring hospital treatment on the mainland. Helimed 79, based in Aberdeen, can make the journey to Kirkwall in under an hour. A recent call out saw our air ambulance crew respond to the Balfour Hospital in Kirkwall where a man required surgery at Aberdeen Royal Infirmary, airlifting him quickly and comfortably to specialist care.

SCAA used its speed and manoeuvrability to airlift a specialist EMRS (Emergency Medical Retrieval Service) team from Aberdeen direct to the scene of a recent trauma emergency in Speyside in the fastest possible time. The team was then able to treat the patient and accompany her to hospital in a land ambulance.
